Our History




Wollongong City Employment Training Inc (WCET) was incorporated in August 1994. In 1998 WCET became a Community Work Coordinator in the Illawarra for the Work for the Dole Program through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.

Also in 1998 WCET forged a partnership with the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) to establish a Skills Centre for the Entertainment, Media and Music industry. To do this 313 was established as a trading arm of WCET.

313




313 is a Registered Training Organisation that focuses its training and education in the Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment and Media industries and offer a range of nationally recognised full-time/part-time courses, non-accredited short courses and workshops.

313 delivers a high level of expertise in training that provides a broad range of employment and educational outcomes.

Al WrightAl Wright
Head of Audio / Trainer

Dual ARIA award winning audio engineer (87’ and 90’) Al Wright is now a South Coast resident and loving it. His engineering credits feature some of Australia’s biggest, influential and most successful artists, INXS, Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes, Divinyls, Hoodoo Gurus, The Angels, Rose Tattoo, American glam rockers RATT and current local acts such as Richie and the Creeps, Watt Riot and the Pink Fits.

Al began his career in Sydney in the mid 70’s and after some hard slogging it out years, landed the very prestigious (and envious) role as Chief Engineer for 80’s OZ rock hit factory Rhinoceros Recordings based in inner Sydney’s Darlinghurst.

Al has also worked along side some of the worlds greatest music producers, Chris Thomas (Pink Floyd, Elton John INXS, Sex Pistols, Pretenders) Mike Stone (Queen, KISS Jimmy Barnes) Chris Kimsey (Rolling Stones, Noiseworks) Bob Clearmountain (Brian Adams, U2, Misex) Julian Mendelssohn (Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Machinations) too name a few.

Al is now heavily and happily involved with 313 training based in Coniston where he is heading up the audio department and doing both music technical production teaching and managing the 313 Studio commercial complex.

Sharon Lewis
Live Production Theatre & Events Trainer

Sharon started her career in lighting after an interest in drama lead her to complete an Associate Diploma in Lighting, Audio and Stage Management. This lead to a ten year career in the music Industry as a lighting designer operator and tour manager for some of Australia’s most accomplished bands at prestigious venues and festivals. She also works in theatre with world class shows at The Illawarra Performing Arts Centre. She runs a production company that produce Music videos, Documentaries, Short films and corporate DVD’s.

Last year Sharon worked as director of Photography on a feature film as well as producing an international sporting event at Sydney Entertainment Centre for Fox Sports.

As well as being a musician her other interests include, writing, visual arts and photography.

Phil Diamond
Trainer at 313/WCET

Phil has an extensive background in Electronic Media. After leaving school, Phil began working in radio at Sydneys 2SM, since then he has been an Announcer, News Reader and Producer at a number of radio stations in NSW and Queensland. He also worked at Win Television for nearly 14 years, as a producer, editor, audio engineer, video tape operator, and Presenter of News and Weather, Commercials, and numerous other WIN produced programs.

Phil has been a Trainer/facilitator at 313/WCET for nearly 4 years and enjoys the challenges, creativity and facilities at the organisation plus using his knowledge of 23 years in the media.

He also has a strong interest in the environment and has completed courses in Permaculture and Conservation and Land Management.

Phil enjoys his garden and building, studying the machinations of the media, and a witty chilled out conversation.

Carl Whitbread Carl Whitbread
Graphic Designer / Trainer

Carl is a Graphic Designer and trainer for 313 with over 7 years industry experience, sharing his skills in Multimedia, Print Design and Web Design.

He has worked for various companies on a diverse range of projects over the years, everything from interactive training programs, animation, branding, print work, websites and apparel. Some of his clients have included Boost Juice, AMP, Department of Defence, RTA, University of Wollongong and Energy Australia just to name a few, as well as many local bands and businesses.

Carl brings his experience to the classroom where he aims to not only pass on his knowledge, but to inspire and motivate students about the world of graphic design.

Carls other interests include writing and playing music and long walks on the beach.

Duncan MacleanDuncan Maclean
Multimedia, Design & Animation Trainer

With an extensive combination of fine arts and animation training and experience, Duncan is able to deliver a wide base of knowledge for his students to draw upon.

Coupled with his recently awarded Bachelor in Creative Arts, majoring in Graphic Design and industry experience from a range of different real world projects, Duncan provides a unique blend of practical graphics based education and academic thought.

Silvia Wellington
Business Trainer

Silvia Wellington is a professional work place trainer/assessor in the management, retail, marketing and business industry services. Due to Silvia’s past on the job experience in these fields, Silvia has the ability to educate new and experienced people in these fields.

If you are thinking of entering these industries or are currently employed in these industries and would like to increase your knowledge, Silvia has on the job experience as well as the theory understanding to assist you to achieve the best possible learning.

Prior to work place training/assessing Silvia spent 13 years in the retail/business industry – 10 years being in management positions including intense training of staff and managers.

Silvia offers a wide range of programs and services – starting from Cert II level through to Diploma Level in the Business, Retail and Marketing industries.

Silvia specializes in ‘communication’ and getting the best from your self and your team along with using management systems.

Johdy Dal Santo
Trainer/Assessor

With a strong retail and business development background, Johdy Dal Santo applies her passion for communication, and customer service to her role as a Trainer and Assessor for 313.

Committed to ensuring a positive and successful training experience for her clients, Johdy enjoys exceeding trainee expectations in the delivery of a wide range of 313 Training Programs, in either the classroom or workplace.

Whether training individuals, groups, or providing business development support Johdy is able to utilise her previous studies, in Human Resource Management, Small Business Development, Communications (inc. Landmark Education) and Retail Management, to provide professional, positive and productive outcomes.

When not training for 313 Johdy enjoys Music, Practicing Quantum Physics and Reading.

Kath Flack-CraneKath Flack-Crane
Traineeship Coordinator

Kath Flack-Crane is a Traineeship Coordinator who helps people gain new qualifications and skills through the completion of traineeships. Prior to beginning work with 313, Kath spent 4 years with the Job Network assisting the long-term unemployed gain work and come off Government Benefits.

Kath offers a wide range of programs and services in traineeships – from Business, Retail, Hospitality, Entertainment, Music, Screen to Printing and Graphic Arts

After a successful career as firstly an Employment officer to a Site Manager for the Job Network Kath now offers traineeships to employers to assist staff to become better skilled and qualified.

Grant FraserGrant Fraser
Client Services Manager

Grant has lived in the Wollongong area since moving from Scotland 12 years ago. Having been a Manager in the hospitality industry for most of his adult life, he found himself Managing Dicey Riley’s Irish pub in town. After 2 years, Grant commenced his Psychology degree studies at Wollongong University which led to a move into the banking industry. From there he has worked as Business Development Manager in Real Estate, Commercial Leasing and for the last 2 years has been the driving force behind the very successful Voiceworx Performing Arts school based in Warrawong.

Grant’s big claim to fame is that he was once General Manager of the world’s largest ‘fish and chip shop’ which is situated in Glasgow Scotland. He was even entered into the Guinness Book of Records for selling the most restaurant meals in one day, a staggering 11,916.

Grant is married to a local girl Nella, a well-respected and well-known Musician and Singing teacher. They have 3 daughters. Nella and Grant both like to travel and love camping whenever they get the opportunity.

Since joining 313 Training Grant’s focus has been on driving new business by providing an initial point of contact for new customers. Grant has a passion for excellence and truly believes in “Going the extra mile” to ensure that his clients are given the best service possible.

Grant is extremely excited about working at ‘313 training’ and is looking forward to providing a first class service to the Illawarra for years to come.

Kara GatesKara Gates
Training Coordinator

Kara coordinates all the Training programs for both 313’s Wollongong and Nowra facilities and is the key administrative driver for all of the administration activity around these programs.

Kara commenced employment at WCET/313 as their Receptionist after winning the 2004 Illawarra Regional Youth Training Awards, Business Services VET School Student of the Year, through her Business Administration studies at TAFE. From starting on Reception, Kara has progressed through the various roles within 313 to the role that she is in today.

Kara believes customer satisfaction is imperative and wants everyone to walk away happy and with what they were after and will strive to make sure this happens!

With Kara, there’s never a dull a moment. She loves to get in there and get the job done. Kara has also recently gained her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification where she will provide training and assessment primarily in Business Administration.

Raelene McGirrRaelene McGirr
Administration Assistant

Raelene McGirr is an Administration Assistant who helps everyone in the office from trainers to staff and students with any or all paperwork that may be required within the office setting. Raelene is a mother of two who has just not long ago returned to the workforce after years of being a stay at home mum.

Raelene went back to TAFE and studied in Certificate III in Business to upgrade her skills and passed with a credit. Starting out at WCET doing work experience she acquired a job within WCET because of her initiative and hard work. She is now full time and is aspiring her way within WCET to do the best she can.

Dannelle Robson
Program Administrator

Dannelle is 313’s Program Administrator – addicted to paperwork perfection.

She has been involved in training since completing a traineeship with the NSW Department of Education and Training – a long time ago! She joined 313 two years ago after working from home through her maternity leave with another training company because she couldn’t fathom the idea of not working in the ever changing industry for 12 months.

Her role with 313 is all things administrative and ensuring AQTF compliance of resources and paperwork. If it isn’t filled out correctly you’ll just have to do it again! (That 3 year old better learn fast or he may find himself re-doing homework often in the years ahead) Dannelle loves to see people learn and expand their horizons in the workforce, including herself – recently completing a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to provide more direct training to others. One day she may even manage to train her husband to do things her way!

Deannah JohnstoneDeannah Johnstone
Receptionist

Deannah Johnstone is our receptionist who helps our customers with any enquiries they may have about our courses or the company. She also deals a lot with the administration side of 313’s traineeships making sure that all of our clients information is up to date and they are being promptly supplied with their training resources.

Prior to working here at 313 Deannah was completing her HSC at Dapto High School. She also did a lot of work with her Mums catering business as a cook and an admin assistant. She has recently finished her certificate II in Business through 313 and is now continuing on to complete her Certificate III in Business Administration.
